My father and I traded some firearms last time I went up to visit him. I got rid of a 22 magnum, and he gave me a shotgun. This shotgun came from a friend of his who died from injuries from an accident at work. It was a gift to my dad, and he told me to take good care of it.
The old stock was pretty badly beat up, scratched, dented and the varnish was thin in a lot of areas. I sanded everything down, including some of the smaller scratches in the wood. I applied some gunstock woodstain, and applied the highest gloss urethane varnish I could find. It looks a lot closer to new than when It came into my hands.
I will be carrying this gun with me into the field when dove season starts this fall. You'll have to stay tuned for that...
The doves will probably admire the high gloss, and that will be about the last thing they will admire.
